Jacob's was founded in 1851 in Waterford, Ireland, by brothers William Beale Jacob and Robert Jacob as W. & R. Jacob. Starting as a small bakery producing simple biscuits and crackers, the company grew alongside 19th-century demand for convenient baked foods and expanded into a wide range of snacks.
The cream cracker was invented around 1885 by Joseph Haughton in Dublin and later produced by Jacob's, where William Beale Jacob refined the recipe. Its name comes from the creaming method used in preparation, which gives the cracker its distinctive texture, traditionally made with fermented dough. Quickly embraced by consumers, cream crackers became one of Jacob’s most popular products.
Over time, the cream cracker established itself as a British and Irish classic, enjoyed plain or with cheese, spreads, and soups, and remains instantly recognizable by its iconic orange packaging, which has changed little for more than a century!
